Imagine this, you’ve spent countless hours and a significant amount of money making your garden and flower beds look beautiful and just how you want them. You go to bed proud of your hard work and excited to see your garden grow. The next morning you wake to find your flowers missing, leaves chewed, and bugs swarming.
Anyone who has spent time gardening is likely to have dealt with pests. Whether you have a rabbit problem, a vole problem, or a bug problem, you’ll want to deal with it as soon as possible to preserve your garden.
Let’s look at some of the most common garden pests and how to deal with them.
Animal Friends
If your plants look like they have been nibbled (or entirely eaten), you probably have an animal pest problem. Different animals like different plants, so by quickly researching what type of plant is being eaten you may be able to figure out what type of animal is causing the problem.
Maybe a rabbit is eating your plant’s leaves, or a vole is eating the bulbs you planted. No matter what animal it is, you’ll somehow need to either block them from their food source, or eliminate the animal.
If you fear larger animals are eating your garden, consider using chicken wire to create a barrier between the animals and your garden. For smaller critters like voles and mice, a small fence around your garden may be sufficient.
Bug Problems
If your pest problem is smaller and you suspect a type of insect is destroying your garden, a fence obviously will not solve your problem. In this case you might consider a pesticide to eliminate the invaders.
When choosing a pesticide make sure to select the least potent one possible. Naturally derived pesticides are the safest option, but sometimes not the most effective. It is always wise to start with the least strong and damaging pesticide and increase the strength if it doesn’t work.
Preventative Measures
If you haven’t experienced a pest problem yet, there are some preventative things you can do to limit the amount of issues you may encounter. By keeping your garden well maintained, watered, and free of weeds you can limit pests.
When you are designing and planting your garden also consider adding plants that deter pests and attract beneficial insects to help the garden stay healthy.
